As we enter a crucial period for the insurance and reinsurance industry, many eyes will undoubtedly be on the upcoming Bermuda Risk Summit, set to take place from 10th – 12th March at the Hamilton Princess Hotel & Beach Club. Now in its fourth year, this relatively young conference has quickly established itself as a must-attend event for risk specialists and thought leaders from across the island and the global insurance market.

With this year’s theme, "Redefining Resilience," the summit will provide a platform to explore how the industry is adapting to an increasingly complex risk environment. Carefully timed ahead of the 6/1 and 7/1 renewal seasons, the event will bring together some of the sharpest minds to shed light on the key challenges, emerging risks, and opportunities shaping the market.

I am pleased to be attending the summit once again this year alongside my colleagues Martin Wiggins, Craig Freeman and Helen Souza, who is based in Bermuda and has an intimate understanding of the market’s unique dynamics, as well as personal relationships with many of the island’s insurers.

This year’s summit will feature insights from industry experts, including Stephen Catlin, Mark Cloutier, Nicolas Papadopoulo, Kathleen Reardon and many more, as they explore key issues such as:

  • Tax and regulation – The evolving landscape and its implications for global insurers.
  • Economic outlook and ratings – How macroeconomic trends are shaping risk appetites and capital flows.
  • Climate and capacity – Addressing the increasing frequency of climate-related losses and the role of alternative capital.
  • Cross-border collaboration – The importance of partnerships with key markets, such as Lloyd’s Lab and Bermuda MoU.

The Power of the Bermuda Market

With its unique market positioning, Bermuda has long been at the epicentre of the global risk and reinsurance industry, acting as a bridge between international markets. With its strong regulatory framework, tax efficiencies, and ever-growing talent pool, the island continues to attract investment and insurance experts from around the world. Bermuda’s reinsurers play a pivotal role in the global industry, representing approximately 36% of the worldwide reinsurance market based on property/casualty net premiums earned. The market continues to demonstrate impressive financial strength, with total equity rising to $164 billion in 2023, reflecting strong capitalisation and resilience.

However, what truly sets Bermuda apart is its tight-knit community, where relationships drive business. Many insurers and industry leaders know one another personally, fostering an environment where trust and collaboration are fundamental. Bermuda’s networking and relationship-driven culture is one of the island’s greatest strengths, which is why the Bermuda Risk Summit is such a crucial event.

Beyond the keynote presentations and panel discussions, one of its most valuable aspects is the ability to engage with experts from across the island and the wider market. With an expected audience of over 400 delegates from around the world, the summit is a perfect opportunity to exchange ideas, forge new relationships, and strengthen existing ones. Whether at the event itself or during one of the many informal gatherings around Hamilton, attendees will have unparalleled access to decision-makers shaping the future of the industry.
